Stamp duty on a rent agreement in Mumbai
Work out the stamp duty and registration fee on a leave and licence agreement in Maharashtra.
How it is calculated
Leave and licence agreements in Maharashtra pay stamp duty at 0.25% of:
- the total rent for the whole period (with any yearly increase), plus
- a notional interest of 10% a year on the refundable deposit, for the period, plus
- any non-refundable amount, in full.
Stamp duty is rounded up to the next ₹100. The registration fee is ₹1,000 in municipal corporation areas and ₹500 elsewhere. Online e-registration usually adds a small document-handling charge and the service provider's fee.
Example: ₹75,000 a month for 11 months with a ₹3 lakh deposit. Rent ₹8,25,000 + deposit interest ₹27,500 = ₹8,52,500. 0.25% = ₹2,131, rounded to ₹2,200, plus ₹1,000 registration.
